Indian MoD deploys CSN for Coast Guard

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has activated the Static Sensors Project of Coastal Surveillance Network (CSN) for the Coast Guard at Mumbai and Porbandar, India.

The project implementation is scheduled to be completed in major cities and territories by September 2012 and March 2013 respectively.

The project involves installation of frequency diversity radar, electro optic sensors, charge coupled device (CCD) day camera, low light TV (LLTV) night camera and long range thermal imagers, VHF sets and Met equipment on lighthouses and masts erected on DGLL Land.

Phase-I of the project also includes establishment of 46 Remote Radar sites to provide electronic surveillance of high sensitivity and high traffic density along the coast.

The Static Sensors will provide surveillance up to 25nm from the coast line around each Radar sites, while the sensor data will be transferred over a robust hierarchical network architecture to the Coast Guard officials.

Intended to prevent intrusion by monitoring the movement of vessels along coastline, the project of Chain of Static Sensors is also expected to support search and rescue (SAR) operations for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

The project is also expected to support maritime agencies while providing the envisaged impetus to the overall coastal security assets.

Phase-II of the project will include establishment of 38 additional Remote Radar sites including integration of 21 sites of the VTMS Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Khambhat.
