AgustaWestland’s second AW169 conducts its maiden flight

AgustaWestland’s second light intermediate helicopter prototype, AW169 has successfully conducted its maiden flight at Cascina Costa in Italy.

The first 4.5t AW169 multi-purpose twin engine helicopter prototype is scheduled for display at the Farnborough International Airshow, which runs from 9-15 July 2012.

Another AW169 transport utility helicopter will join the first two prototypes later in 2012 followed by fourth prototype in 2013.

AW169 is one among the AgustaWestland’s family of new generation helicopters that also includes the AW139 and AW189 models, which feature high performance flight characteristics and safety features as well as same common cockpit layout, design philosophy and maintenance concepts.

Designed to provide high performance with multi-role capabilities and to meet all the latest safety standards, the AW169 helicopter is due to achieve civil certification in 2014.

Equipped with several new technologies in the rotor system, engines, avionics, transmission and electric power generation and distribution systems, the AW169 provides the highest level of safety and operational benefits for its customers.

Powered by two 1,000 shp class PW210A turboshaft engines, the helicopter also features APU mode capability and touch screen cockpit devices and can be used for EMS, search and rescue, law enforcement, passenger and offshore transport and utility missions.

Additional features of the aircraft include integrate advanced electro-optical and communications mission equipment.
