Nato conducts counter-piracy training with Somalia Coast Guard personnel

Nato’s counter-piracy Operation Ocean Shield’s Task Force 508 has undertaken a counter-piracy training session for Somalia Coast Guards personnel, off the coast of Hobyo town.

The two-day training earlier this week is the first such session for Somali maritime forces in their territorial waters.

HDMS Esbern Snare commanding officer commander Henrik Rasmussen said: "Through years of naval presence and cooperation, the international community has contained piracy in these waters.

"However, in the long run the best solution is for Somali authorities to be able to suppress the maritime crime themselves. Today we have taken an important step in that direction."

As part of training, the coast guard trainees, originating from the Galmudug Region on Somalia’s east coast, honed their skills on criminal investigation procedures, first aid, and motor engine maintenance and repair.

HDMS Esbern Snare lieutenant Heino Kristensen said: "We could see that the pupils came with proficiency already obtained from training with other international units," said the manager of the two day course.

"We were able to build on this and heighten their skills."

Upon the completion of training, about 15 participating Somali Coast Guard personnel were awarded certificates.
