US DoD to set up new Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center

The US Department of Defence (DoD) is setting up a new Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center, which will deliver similar services as by the National Counterterrorism Center for terrorism.

Assistant to the US president for homeland security and counterterrorism Lisa Monaco said: "No single government entity is responsible for producing coordinated cyber threat assessments, ensuring that information is shared rapidly among existing cyber centers and other [government] elements, and supporting the work of operators and policymakers with timely intelligence about the latest cyber threats and threat actors."

Mainly aimed at filling such gaps, the new centre will analyse and integrate information already accumulated under existing authorities and enable centres already performing cyber functions to more effectively perform their activities.

As part of the plan, the government will even work with the private sector in a bid to improve the security of what has turned out to be a cyber ecosystem.

Monaco added: "To the private sector, we’ve made it clear that we will work together.

"We’re not going to bottle up our intelligence. If we have information about a significant threat to a business, we’re going to do our utmost to share it.

US President Obama has allocated $14bn to battle cyber threats and protect critical infrastructure, government networks and other systems.

Monaco said: "I want to commend companies that have shown strong leadership by coming forward as soon as they identify breaches and seek assistance so we can work together and address threats more rapidly."
