ASRY to construct new landing craft for Bahrain Coast Guard

Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard (ASRY) has signed an agreement to construct a new landing craft for the Bahrain Coast Guard.

Under the terms of $2.8m contract, the company will construct the first of the two landing craft for the transport of vehicles, potable water, and fuel.

The contract marks ASRY’s first newbuild award since the launch of its New Construction & Engineering division, which is responsible for growing the new construction programme at the shipyard.

Bahrain Coast Guard commander brigadier Ala Abdulla Seyadi said: "ASRY’s experience is well-known, and their quality of work shows through their ship repair operations.

"It’s a natural step for them to move to step up their newbuild work, and we’re very comfortable trusting them to grow our fleet at a reasonable price point.

"We hope to work with them with several other projects in the future."

ASRY New Construction & Engineering senior manager Sauvir Sarkar said: "The newbuild market in the Arabian Gulf still has significant room for growth.

"We aim to put this region on the map in terms of vessel design and construction, especially small-to-medium sized vessels."

Powered by two 600hp engines, the landing craft will be approximately 34.5m in overall length, with a top speed of 10k and a cargo deck capacity of 40t.

Delivery of the vessel to the Bahrain Coast Guard is scheduled to take place during the first half of 2016.
