Abu Dhabi Police unveils Mobile Ballistic Laboratory at ADIHEX 2014

The Machinery and Firearms section at the Forensic Evidence Department of Abu Dhabi Police has displayed the Mobile Ballistic Laboratory during the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition, ADIHEX 2014.

The Mobile Ballistic Laboratory is the latest addition to the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS).

The a 25m long bullet proof trailer is equipped with a sound proofed wheelbase cargo bed and a water recovery tank to recover bullet fragments and cartridge cases that need testing.

The vehicle is fitted with remote controlled firing pad, high-end surveillance cameras, a control room, ballistic pendulum to measure the bullet’s speed, spiral shape barrier to collect bullets and a miniature shooting range.

Forensic Evidence Department’s Weapons and Ammunition Quality Inspection Center director Jassim Al Manout said: "The Abu Dhabi Police’s center is the first of its kind in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and is internationally recognised by the Permanent International Commission for Firearms Testing (CIP), which prescribes the technical and legal guidelines for the manufacturing, testing and approval for firearms manufacturers and companies."

ADP is planning to link the data collected by the mobile laboratory with the database of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).

The laboratory is capable of uploading the firearm’s data in to the IBIS through a joint communication link and a team trained in the UK and Australia will undertake technical testing and ammunition, Lieutenant Mohamed Hamad Al Kaabi said.

ADP officials said that the system allows rapid actions during shooting accidents and provide the facility to run tests on site instead of sending it to the forensic labs.
