US Customs and Border Protection orders screening systems from Smiths Detection

The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has placed an order with Smiths Detection for the delivery of screening systems.

The five-year IDIQ contract forms part of the CBP’s non-intrusive inspection programme targeted at defending points of entry by land, air or sea.

The contract also involves screening systems, accessories, and warranties in addition to Smiths Detection’s training programme.

The new scanners will cover a range of operations, from screening passenger baggage to observing cargo for contraband, which include narcotics and weapons, in addition to nuclear and radiological devices.

In April, Smiths Detection was awarded a $62.9m order from the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for the delivery of automatic explosives scanners for carry-on baggage.

The automatic threat identification X-ray (aTiX) systems integrate multi-view, high resolution imaging to detect explosives and other threats.
