Siemens to support US Coast Guard’s energy conservation measures

The US Coast Guard (USCG) has awarded a contract to Siemens Government Technologies to deploy and implement energy-conserving upgrades at the US Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, US.

Under the $5.3m contract, Siemens Industry’s building technologies division will provide energy conservation upgrades including boiler and burner conversions for heating improvements and installing a building automation system across the base.

Additionally, the company will upgrade mechanical HVAC improvements and water conservation measures.

Using the Department of Energy’s energy savings performance contract, the project cost will be funded by the energy savings assured by Siemens.

Siemens Government Technologies president and CEO Judy Marks said, "Through the implementation of these broad energy conservation measures (ECMs), we will ensure simultaneous energy savings and infrastructure enhancements for Base Elizabeth City."

Intended to reduce electricity consumption by more than 1.1 million KW hours annually on the base, the project will eliminate 78,000 gallons of fuel oil use and 32,000 gallons of liquid propane use each year.

As part of the 14-year energy savings performance contract, the Coast Guard aims to produce $540,000 in energy cost savings per year and fund the cost of the contract with those savings.

Commissioned in August 1940, the US Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City is located in northeastern North Carolina and comprises the Aviation Logistics Center, Aviation Technical Training Center, Air Station Elizabeth City and Small Boat Station Elizabeth City.
