Northern Transportation to refurbish Canadian Coast Guard’s Dumit vessel

Northern Transportation has been awarded a contract by the Government of Canada to carry out Vessel Life Extension (VLE) and refurbishment work for Canadian Coast Guard ship, CCGS Dumit.

Awarded as part the $360m investment to extend the life of the Coast Guard fleet, the latest $5.9m VLE contract involves extensive repairs and upgrades all through the vessel, including replacing the ship service generator, electronic switchboard and equipment.

Canada Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council Leona Aglukkaq said: "Our Government is proud to have made historic investments to renew the Canadian Coast Guard fleet.That translates into jobs and economic growth all across the country.

"It also ensures that the CCG can continue to keep our waterways safe and accessible for mariners, shippers and fishermen, which is especially important for the North, with its challenging conditions."

Work under the project is expected to begin during the vessel’s non-operational period, from early December 2014 to early May 2015.

Canada Minister of Public Works and Government Services Diane Finley said: "This investment is not only an example of our Government’s commitment to Canada’s shipbuilding industry, but it also demonstrates our commitment to Canada’s North.

"This contract alone will secure about 50 jobs in Hay River, Northwest Territories."

The CCGS Dumit, which is based in Hay River, Northwest Territories, has been offering Aid to Navigation services on the Mackenzie River.
