IDF’s new navigation system to detect local threats

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is developing a new navigation system aimed at alerting transport trucks, prior to entering to a dangerous region.

The new highly computerised system will provide updates and exact aerial images from the field in real time for the users.

Earlier, IDF has developed an older model of the navigation system that uses a map to navigate and provides updates in real time as well as reports on affected areas while enabling examination of the current field situation.

In 2010, the older system was delivered to disaster-struck Haiti.

IDF now has plans to deploy the new enhanced navigation system with the Israeli home front units to support missions.

The new system has recently undergone testing as part of a large-scale training exercise, during which transport battalions trained in mobilising forces and equipments across the country.

Transportation headquarters commander colonel Yoram Azulai said, "During the training exercise we simulated attacks against the home front including rockets hitting main roads that were blocked as a result."

"The new computerized navigation system provides transport commanders with a better image of the current situation in the area around them."

The advanced navigation system provides exact location of all transport routes across Israel while assisting them to manoeuvre accordingly to avoid potential danger or places where a chemical rocket may have fallen.
