IDF to deploy tunnel detection technology

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has developed a tunnel detection system, also known as Strong Number, intended to expose tunnelling activities while preventing cross-border attacks from Gaza.

Developed under guidance from the IDF Ground Forces Technology Division, the system has been put through a series of testing, conducted by the IDF, near the Gaza border in the last few months.

An IDF spokesperson told Israel Army Radio: "The IDF believes that a solution has been found to the tunnelling problem; we will soon be able to overcome this complex challenge."

"What we have is a reliable system that seldom fails."

A senior officer from the Technology Division said that the system is scheduled for experimental deployment by the end of 2012 and is expected to be valued over $50.9m.

Commenting on the development, Independent Media Review Analysis (IMRA) Aaron Lerner said, "But if the IDF has come up with a way to detect the tunnels this means a dramatic shift in the equation."

IDF is planning to float a request for tender to private companies inviting bids on system installation along Israel’s 10km border with Gaza.
