GD delivers Rescue 21 SAR System to US Coast Guard

General Dynamics (GD) C4 Systems has delivered its Rescue 21 search and rescue communications system to the US Coast Guard for installation at Sector Buffalo, in New York, US, in a bid to increase speed and accuracy of maritime search and rescue operations as well as response to security and environmental threats.

The Rescue 21 system uses advanced direction-finding technologies and digital communications to allow Coast Guard personnel to quickly and efficiently respond to mariners during distress at a distance of 20nm from the shore.

The system also interconnects port security and maritime law enforcement officials, enabling information sharing and interoperability during response to threats related to maritime security and environment as well as other homeland security missions.

GD C4 Systems’ Communication Networks vice president Bill Weiss said the Rescue 21 search and rescue system delivers unmatched safety and emergency responsiveness.

"On a national scale, Rescue 21 is the Department of Homeland Security’s first nationwide interoperable communications network that demonstrates how advanced broadband technologies improve maritime situational awareness, communication and collaboration among agencies," Weiss added.

Monitoring over 41,800 miles of US coastline, Rescue 21 towers and command centres can accommodate additional sensors and command and control equipment.

With 14 communication towers and 10 facilities ranging from Easter Great Lakes to Massena, New York, including Niagara Falls, Sector Buffalo is the 38th operational Rescue 21 sector adding 625 miles to the system’s nationwide coverage.

Sector Buffalo responds to over 1,000 search and rescue cases on an annual basis.

The entire national Rescue 21 system currently consists of 247 towers and 200 command and control facilities, including an emergency/disaster recovery capability.
