Canadian Coast Guard receives new vessel

The Canadian Coast Guard has received Canadian Coast Guard Service (CCGS) S. Dudka during a ceremony held in Alberton, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

National Revenue minister and Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency minister Gail Shea said the government has invested more in the Canadian Coast Guard to help them perform their missions.

Built by ABCO Industries as part of $2.9m contract, the 14m-long new vessel has been named in honour of a decorated war veteran and distinguished federal fishery officer, Stanley Dudka.

National Defence minister Peter MacKay said, "This new vessel is a fitting tribute to a Nova Scotian who proudly represented his country."

The jet-propelled CCGS S. Dudka has been designed to support missions for the coast guard as well as Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Conservation and Protection programme in the department’s Gulf region.

The CCGS has invested more than $1.4bn to procure new mid-shore patrol vessels, scientific research vessels, a new hovercraft and Canada’s first polar icebreaker, to boost its capabilities.
