UK Met Police chief warns of rising terror threat

In the midst of increasing terror threat, UK Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe claims that the security services have foiled ‘four or five’ terrorist plots during the year.

Further, the official revealed that the rising threat has been putting force on resources and suggested that the government may rise its funding in the autumn statement.

In an interview with BBC’s Andrew Marr show, Hogan-Howe said: "We’ve said on average over the last few years it’s been about one a year. But this year alone we think four or five.

"Over the last few months, again you will have seen in the press we have made some significant arrests, and [they] have all been followed by charges."

The latest comments come before the roll out of a countrywide terrorism awareness drive.

Further, the UK’s terror threat level had been on rise from large to severe in August amid rising concerns about hundreds of aspiring British jihadis moving to Iraq and Syria to study terrorist ‘tradecraft’.

Hogan-Howe added: "It doesn’t take an awful lot of organising, doesn’t take too many to conspire together, there’s no real complexity to it.

"What that means is we have got a very short time to interdict, to actually intervene and make sure that these people don’t get away with it.

"So, that is causing real pressure on us in terms of resources and in terms of judgment making, which is a very difficult thing for all involved."
