Smiths Detection to supply radiation detectors to US DHS’ DNDO

Smiths Detection has secured a contract to supply radiation detectors to the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) for a period of five years.

Under the terms of the $1.27m indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, the company will provide RadSeeker handheld radioisotope detector and identifier to locate the source of radiological material.

The portable devices will be used to enhance security and screening measures throughout the nation.

Smiths Detection interim president Stephen Esposito said: "Under a competitively-awarded contract RadSeeker was developed in cooperation with the DHS to help keep our country safe from the threat of nuclear and radiological proliferation.

"It’s another example of how we work with our customers to understand their needs and then leverage our experience as the world leader for threat detection technology to create solutions that meet the challenge."

Based on Symetrica’s Discovery Technology, the RadSeeker features advanced spectrum processing and identification algorithms with a choice of sensitive detectors.

Capable of distinguishing the naturally occurring radiological nuclear threats from other permitted radiological materials, the next-generation RadSeeker will help the federal government in detecting and identifying a range of nuclear threats.

Currently, RadSeeker detector is being used by the US Customs and Border Protection, emergency responders and law enforcement agents around the world.
