Smiths Detection rolls out new explosives detector

Smiths Detection has launched its next-generation explosives trace detector for deployment in global aviation and infrastructure security.

Mainly aimed at trimming down the cost and time of screening for a range of high-threat explosives, the new IONSCAN 600 integrates non-radioactive Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) source, which eradicates the requirement for particular licensing, handling or disposal needs.

Smiths Detection Product and Technology vice-president Shan Hood said: "Accurate explosives detection is crucial for the international security market.

"The new IONSCAN 600 fits into a layered security approach, delivering the detection capability needed, while helping security professionals minimise overhead through its user-friendly configuration, flexibility, and cost advantages."

Weighing at around 23lb, the IONSCAN 600 features a built-in handle that facilitates carrying the device, while its hot-swappable battery delivers continuous sampling and analysis potential, enabling it to be transferred while still in use.

Claimed to be optimised for reduced, the system features onboard diagnostics that help operators in maintenance as well as offer troubleshooting for error resolution.

The latest version also offers improved manual sampling with single-use swabs, or with an optional low-cost, redesigned wand.
