Morpho signs strategic biometric partnership with INTERPOL

Morpho, a subsidiary of Safran has signed an agreement to supply automated biometric identification systems and other technical support services to the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL), to enhance global security.

Under the partnership accord, Morpho will provide latest-generation automated fingerprint biometric system (AFIS), which includes enhanced capabilities and offers even greater speed, to replace the INTERPOL’s existing AFIS.

The new system will enable officers in all member countries to conduct checks and identify internationally wanted persons via INTERPOL’s global network.

Morpho will also provide advanced security solutions for the future INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI), which is scheduled to open in Singapore in 2014.

Morpho chairman and chief executive officer Philippe Petitcolin said, "This new partnership is a continuation of our decade-long effort to support INTERPOL in its fight against transborder crime through delivery of advanced biometric solutions."

The five-year agreement also seeks advanced facial recognition technology as an additional criminal identification tool. The company with other key partners will collaborate with INTERPOL on the subject of border security.

Additionally, the partnership will focus on global standards development and best practices that will enhance border efficiency and security and the related threats through the use of biometrics.

INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald Noble said the organisation requires advanced biometric solutions to effectively counter all forms of transnational crime, as criminals use ever more sophisticated ways to avoid detection.

"This is particularly true at borders, when officials have just moments to decide whether to allow a person into their country or not," Noble added.
