Indian Coast Guard commissions new FPVs Achook and Agrim

The Indian Cost Guard (ICG) has commissioned two fast patrol vessels (FPVs), known as ICGS Achook and Agrim, which were built by Cochin Shipyard (CSL).

To be based at Mumbai under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West), the fifth and sixth vessels form part of a series of the overall 20 being built under a $338m contract that was awarded in 2010.

Integrating latest weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipment, the 50m long, 290t indigenous FPVs are capable of conducting missions including anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, fisheries protection, search and rescue (SAR), exclusive economic zone (EEZ) surveillance, and coastal patrol.

These water jets powered FPVs offer maximum cruise speed of 33k, can also be deployed as communication and escort platforms during hostile and wartime conditions while operating in Indian coastal waters and nearby island territories.

The vessels also integrate special features including an Integrated Bridge Management System (IBMS), Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS) and an Integrated Gun Mount with indigenous Fire Control System (FCS).

In addition, the Cochin yard is also constructing the Indian Navy’s indigenous aircraft carrier; an Offshore Support Vessel for Norwegian owner and a Buoy Tender Vessel for Directorate of Light Houses and Light Ships, Indian Government.

The remaining 14 vessels are anticipated to be commissioned by 2017.
