Implant Sciences to supply QS-B220 detectors to German airports

Implant Sciences has received a contract to supply its QS-B220 desktop explosives trace detectors to several international airports in Germany.

Under the contract, whose value remains undisclosed, the company will supply 50 systems to the unnamed airports, including one that is consistently recognised as one of the best and busiest airports in Europe.

Implant Sciences Global Sales and Marketing vice-president Dr. Darryl Jones said: "We were thrilled to work with the customer to develop a customized software configuration for the QS-B220 that met their specific requirements, which we then integrated into our newest release of our European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC)-approved system.

"Our German customer needed ETD technology that enabled them to screen very high volumes of passengers with an extremely low false alarm rate.

"The system we optimised out-performed the other ETD systems when tested in side by side airport trials.

Incorporating the company’s patented non-radioactive ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) analysis technology, the QS-B220 systems perform real-time detection and identification of trace amounts of different military, commercial and homemade explosives, as well as illicit drugs.

The trace detection systems feature a radioactive material-free design, easy-to-use touchscreen user interface, push-button maintenance and diagnostics and a patented inCal internal automatic calibration system, which prevents errors that could result from an uncalibrated instrument.

With significantly lower maintenance requirements than its competing systems, the QS-B220 can be deployed for a much lower total cost of ownership than other approved products.
The latest sale takes the number of systems sold to international European Union airports since the end of April to more than 800.

Deliveries under the contract have started, and the software upgrade is scheduled to be implemented into the company’s entire installed base of global QS-B220s later this year.
