EU NavFor’s FGS Berlin performs local maritime capacity building activities in Seychelles

Personnel aboard the European Union Naval Force’s (EU NavFor) combat support ship FGS Berlin have successfully conducted three Local Maritime Capacity Building (LMCB) exercises together with Seychelles Defence Forces.

Aimed at building the build the capacity of security forces of regional partners, LMCBs enable them to hone skills to fight against piracy, supporting further training offered by EUCAP Nestor.

Further the exercise would enable improving skills, coordination and communication amongst the diverse elements of the Seychelles Defence Forces, and also with international partners, like the EU.

The activities involved a firefighting training by Seychelles Coast Guard, followed by a one day workshop attended by Seychelles Coast Guard, which was targeted at handling medical emergencies onboard maritime vessels.

Seychelles Coast Guard member Private Hoareau said: "The training is very helpful. In the past two days I have attained much knowledge."

FGS Berlin lieutenant colonel Anja said: "We are very proud of you and we are very impressed.

"You were a great audience."

The final activity involved a workshop organised for personnel from the Seychelles Coast Guard and Air Force aboard the FGS Berlin vessel, which comprised the background and deployment of the Mercury system including build-up of its users, access and its operational use.

Deployed as an alert and coordination device by all anti-piracy stakeholders, this internet-based secure communication network is also used by Seychelles maritime authorities.
