Australia to transfer four C-130 Hercules aircraft to Indonesia

Australia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesia for the transfer of four Australian Defence Force (ADF) C-130 Hercules aircraft to Indonesia.

The C-130 heavy lift transport aircraft will be used by Indonesia to support and respond to relief operations during natural disasters and humanitarian crisis.

The aircraft refurbishment and ongoing maintenance costs will be funded by Indonesia for its airlift capability.

Australia’s Defence Minister Stephen Smith said that the four surplus Hercules planes, C-130H aircraft models will be given to the Indonesian Air Force in ready-to-fly condition.

Smith was quoted by The Australian as saying, "We’re in a position to decommission some of our C-130Hs and as part of that process, we are gifting four to Indonesia," adding that the transfer was "very important" to help improve Indonesia’s air logistics capability.

The H-models are currently being replaced with the purchase of six giant C-17s and the latest C-130J model Hercules for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

Through the East Asia Summit framework, Australia and Indonesia are working together to enhance humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

The C-130H Hercules features four-blade propellers and is equipped with self-protection systems including chaff and flare dispensers and night-vision goggles for tactical operations at night.

The aircraft is also used by the US Coast Guard to support long-range maritime patrol and search and rescue missions.
